1975 Outstanding Contributions in Education
Max E. Chilcote will receive the 1975 AACC Award for Outstanding Efforts in Education and Training, sponsored by SmithKline Corp. This will be the fifth year that this award has been made.
Dr. Chilcote, a native of Minnesota, received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Most of his professional career was spent at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, starting as Assistant Professor in 1948 and rising to Clinical Professor in Biochemistry in 1970. In 1965, he became Director of the Clinical Chemistry Section of the Erie County Laboratories, which, along with the E. J. Meyer Memorial Hospital it serves in part, are affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo. Subsequently, he became Associate Director (1969) and then Director of these laboratories in 1970. In 1971, he was appointed to the Department of Pathology as Clinical Professor.
Over the years, some seven candidates have received, or are in the process of receiving, their doctorate degrees through the option in Clinical Biochemistry from the Department of Biochemistry, while six postdoctoral trainees have completed a two-year “Training Program in Clinical Biochemistry,” with another four in progress. Dr. Chilcote has been involved with curriculum design and actual teaching of clinical chemistry in a number of medical technology programs over the years at the State University of New York at Buffalo, at D’Youville College, Rosary Hill College, and at the New York Agriculture and Technical Institute at Alfred, N. Y.
Max Chilcote has been a member of AACC since 1955, became a Fellow in 1960, and has been Chairman of the Upstate New York Section. He has served AACC on the Committee on National Meetings, the national Board of Directors, the Publication Committee, and as Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Revision of the Code of Ethics, and currently is Chairman of the Committee on Professional Relations. His other associations are with the American Chemical Society, American Association of Forensic Sciences, President of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists (1973–75), American Society of Clinical Pathologists, New York State Association of Public Health Laboratories, and Sigma Xi.
