1974 Outstanding Contributions Through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
Joseph Benotti received the ninth AACC Award for Outstanding Services by a Clinical Chemist to the Benefit of Clinical Chemistry as a Profession, sponsored by Fisher Scientific Co.
He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry at Holy Cross College. After graduation, he spent the next 10 years doing lipid research with the late Dr. Siegfried Tannhauser at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. In 1946, he assumed charge of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratories at New England Center Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, and stayed until 1953, when he became co-director of Boston Medical Laboratory.
During a long and active career, Joseph Benotti has helped elevate clinical chemistry to a profession through his developmental work and publications on methodology and his teaching of technicians, chemists, and physicians. He developed a special interest in thyroid-function tests and contributed significantly to the methodology in that area.
His expertise in iodine analysis was recognized by the U. S. government and he was sent to various countries in Europe and South America to assist in setting up such laboratories. He was instrumental in establishing a program leading to an M.S. in clinical chemistry in the Biochemistry Department at Tufts University Medical School.
Joe Benotti started the Boston Section AACC (1949), the first one outside of New York. He has held many local offices, was National Treasurer for six years, and has been on the AACC Board of Directors.
