1978 Outstanding Contributions through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
Joseph S. Annino received the 13th AACC Award for Outstanding Contributions through Service to Clinical Chemistry as a Profession, sponsored by the Fisher Scientific Co.
He earned a B.S. from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, and did graduate work at the same school. He spent four years as a clinical chemistry technologist in the laboratories of Dr. John P. Peters at Yale University Department of Internal Medicine.
Mr. Annino then went to University Hospital, Boston University Medical Center, as chief technician in chemistry. He spent the next 19 years at the hospital, progressing to chief clinical chemist, department head of clinical chemistry, and assistant director of clinical laboratories. During this period, Mr. Annino also taught clinical chemistry to medical technologists and medical students, and he served as a consultant to several other laboratories in the Boston area.
In 1969 Mr. Annino left the medical center to assist in founding Clin-Chem Laboratories, Boston, Mass., a referral laboratory for special clinical chemistry testing; he currently is its director.
Mr. Annino’s scientific activities included numerous lectures and invited participation in symposia and workshops. He has published a number of papers on methodology and a widely used textbook, Clinical Chemistry, Principles and Procedures, currently in its 4th edition. He also served on the editorial board of Standard Methods of Clinical Chemistry, volumes 6 and 7, and was chairman of the scientific program for the AACC national meeting in Boston in 1964.
Since joining AACC in 1953, Mr. Annino has served in a number of positions including chairman of the Northeast Section; member of the Board of Directors, the Publications Board, the Committee on Awards, and the Presidential Advisory Committee; chairman of the Finance and Nominating Committees; and national treasurer.
He received the John Gunther Reinhold Award from the Philadelphia Section in 1967 for “conspicuous public service in the advancement of clinical chemistry,” and a Presidential Citation at the national meeting in Chicago in 1977 for dedicated service to the AACC.
