The Health Equity and Access Division leads by employing the equity, inclusion, and diversity principles of integration, promotion, and advocacy to advance global science and the practice of laboratory medicine in the following ways:

  • Identifying health disparities in diseases/syndrome incidence and access to healthcare and the populations impacted. Populations include but are not limited to racialized minorities, pediatric, geriatric, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender nonconforming, queer, intersex, asexual, questioning, and others (LGBTQIA+), low socioeconomic status, and institutionalized.
  • Identifying barriers that populations face when seeking healthcare and creating interventions to reduce/eliminate barriers.
  • Promoting inclusion and participation in the science, practice, and policymaking of the laboratory medicine field in an equitable manner.
  • Examining the impact of systemic racism and bias on the practice and delivery of medicine in the United States and internationally.
  • Educating the ADLM membership on strategies that can be employed to promote health equity by reducing health disparities in the practice of laboratory medicine through sponsored or collaborative educational activities, meetings, and membership-developed scientific articles.
  • Providing a forum for the dissemination of information that is related to health equity, health disparities, and the practice of laboratory medicine/pathology.
