Imagine a forum where you get to participate in multiple discussions on solutions to clinical laboratory pain points. The 70th AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo in Chicago will offer such an opportunity on July 31.
“We are very excited to try a new format,” said Jane Dickerson, PhD, clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington, co-director for clinical chemistry at Seattle Children’s Hospital and session moderator of ( 33110) Speed Dating: Navigating Pain Points in the Clinical Laboratory.
This scientific session offers broad appeal, touching on pain points that every clinical laboratorian experiences on the job, Mark Marzinke, PhD, an assistant professor of pathology and medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and one of the session’s speakers, told CLN Stat.
Small groups will discuss broad pain point topics common to the clinical laboratory. “We wanted to engage the audience in multiple, rapid fire sessions to discuss the topic and solutions,” said Corinne Fantz, PhD, director of scientific affairs for point-of-care testing at Roche Diagnostic Corp., another speaker at the session.
This is how the session will play out: A laboratory challenge will be presented, followed by a group discussion on how to overcome each pain point. Areas will focus on preanalytics, point-of-care testing, laboratory developed tests, and information technology. Attendees will rotate to one of four tables every 15–20 minutes.
“We feel that this format, which is focused on discussion-facilitating vignettes, will enable interaction with speakers as well as other attendees,” Marzinke said. Another speaker, Steven Cotten, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, said that the interactive format was a way to “break away from traditional didactic lectures.” Because the intervals are short, speakers anticipate a high level of engagement.
Through this exercise, attendees will be able to identify common tools in troubleshooting pain points among various scenarios, and quite possibly, introduce some innovative solutions to solve these challenges. Fantz hopes that the session will encourage the growth of professional networks.
“We also expect attendees to use the examples demonstrated in this session as a springboard to identifying and troubleshooting other pain points in their laboratory environments,” Marzinke said.
